Narrative Leadership is marked by the leader's willingness to lead appreciatively of what has transpired before his or her arrival. Basically, this refers to the storied history of a group. That is, the story or stories people tell of themselves and whose point has brought a defining moment in their shared experience. Leaders who lead narratively do so recognizing that our lives are lived in story and that by it we create meaning, myth, and the sacred.

Stories are shared among - not without and with this in mind the narrative leader is never apart from those s/he leads. Doing so is antithetical to story and the relationship it connotes. Leadership of this kind is relational without being slavish, personal yet focused. That in view and the object of the leader's focus is a determination to learn this group's story and with it lead their enterprise to a better place.
